Bid to change All Ireland dates defeated

The All-Ireland hurling and football finals will still be played on the first and third Sundays of September after a proposal to move the dates back was rejected by Congress.

A Leitrim proposal called for the finals to be moved to the third Sunday in August and the football equivalent to the first Sunday in September was overwhelmingly rejected. A similar proposal from Tyrone was also given the thumbs down.

Motion 34, which called for an addition to Rule 121 that would see the provincial and All-Ireland club competitions completed before the start of the National Leagues was rejected after failing to get a two-thirds majority.

The motion was proposed by Antrim, and John McSparran, the Antrim chairman, spoke passionately in favour of it. However, after a count, the motion was rejected by delegates on a 148-92 vote, which meant it was 12 votes short of the required majority.

Had the motion been passed, the traditional date for the All-Ireland club finals, St Patrick's day, would have been moved.

Meanwhile, a proposal from Westmeath which proposes that defeated teams in Phase 2 of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship will play off on a knock-out format, with the losing team relegated to the Christy Ring Cup was passed.

The Christy Ring champions will also play in Tier One of the championship the following year, while the four teams who do not qualify for the All-Ireland SHC quarter-finals will play off, with the two losing teams contesting a relegation play-off. The loser then plays in the Nicky Rackard Cup the following year.

The final part of Motion 35 sees the winners of the Nicky Rackard Cup automatically promoted to the Christy Ring Cup the following year.
